Wright returns to Quakers

STRIKER Tommy Wright has returned to Darlington two years after leaving the club.

The 25-year-old yesterday put pen to paper on a twoyear deal at The Northern Echo Arena after leaving Grimsby Town.

Darlington manager Simon Davey said: "He turned down contract offers with two League Two clubs and Grimsby wanted to keep him as well so he's a player who was in demand.

"He's another player who will offer us lots of experience and presence, and provides me with plenty of striking options, with Chris Senior, Curtis Main and Michael Smith all battling for positions."

He still had one year remaining on his contract at Grimsby who were relegated to Blue Square BET Premier along with Darlington.

But Wright has been allowed to return to Quakers where he was a regular scorer in the side that reached the 2008 play-offs.

Scoring 19 goals in 58 matches attracted attention from Aberdeen who paid around [pounds]100,000 for his services. However, the striker was reluctant to leave Darlington and struggled to make an impact in the Scottish Premier League.

At Pittodrie he started only four league games in 18 months and scored just once.

The Leicester-born forward joined the Mariners in January, making one of his final appearances for the club as a late substitute against Quakers at the Arena in April.

Wright's arrival takes the number of Davey recruitments to six following the arrivals of Kelvin Jack, Sam Russell, Dominik Werling, Jamie Chandler and Senior.

Wright will not be the last of Davey's signings with Barnsley defender O'Neil Thompson among his targets.

Davey added: "I want to have a good balance of players and lots of competition in all positions and I'm delighted with the blend of signings up to now, with the squad starting to shape up nicely.

"We're not done yet though and I'm still on the look-out for two more strikers as well as quite a few players in other areas, but it's good to get the six new lads in already."

But Davey has missed out on Michael Coulson, a player that the manager was hoping to bring in from his former club Barnsley.

The midfielder has opted to sign for Grimsby where he finished last season on loan.

"I knew the Darlington manager Simon Davey from my time at Barnsley, " said Coulson. "He got in touch and we had a chat about things but I was speaking with Grimsby and it would have taken a lot for me to go anywhere else. He was fine about it and understood where I was coming from."
