MEN'S doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong were not on top of their game but did enough to secure their second Malaysia Open crown and end their Putra Stadium jinx yesterday.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong started well but allowed Xu Chen-Guo Zhendong of China to make a comeback in the second game, but then recovered to win 21-15, 16-21, 21-17 in 55 minutes.

Boon Heong's mediocre performance, a constant feature in the tournament, almost derailed the top pair's aspiration of beginning the year with a title but Kien Keat was the saviour again.

Kien Keat's play was rock solid during crucial stages of the match while Xu Chen-Zhendong failed replica breitling to exploit the Malaysians' mistakes.

Kien Keat said unlike in previous matches, he remained focused throughout the match and was also relaxed in crucial situations.

"Overall, I was relaxed and managed to stay focused in the match better than in previous days and it helped. It is always good to start (the year) by winning a title and, hopefully, we can continue," said Kien Keat.

"However, we have to sit down with our coaches and find out why we lose momentum in the middle of a match.

"We will take a (one-week) break for the Chinese New Year before continuing our preparations for the All England and Swiss Open in March."

Emotions spilled over when Kien Keat hugged doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky and the player later explained that the Indonesian has been under a lot of pressure of late.

"The win was more of a relief for Rexy than for us as he seemed to be under a lot of pressure before the final. I think he felt a little relaxed only after we won."

Boon Heong admitted that his attacking play has been in shambles in the tournament and that he must work harder to rectify his game. In
embroidered patches the women's doubles, China's Olympic champions Du Jing-Yu Yang clinched their first Malaysia Open title by beating compatriots and World No 1 Ma Jin-Wang Xiaoli 21-16, 21-12 in 33 minutes.

China also bagged the mixed doubles when Tao Jiaming-Zhang Yawen defeated world champions Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl 19-21, 21-18, 21-15 in 64 minutes.
